Sandstone retaining walls
Moss and grime lifted from structural stonework.
Careful, measured sandstone cleaning that lifts moss, grime and efflorescence from natural stone — preserving the texture and integrity Sydney sandstone is known for.

Sandstone is a signature material across Mosman and the Lower North Shore — used in retaining walls, steps, feature walls and pool surrounds. It's also porous and relatively soft, which means the wrong pressure or the wrong chemical can etch the surface, drive staining deeper, or flush out the natural mineral colour. Specialist sandstone cleaning is about measured pressure, the right dwell time, and products that lift organic growth without harming the stone.
Black mould, green algae and efflorescence (the white mineral deposit that wicks to the surface) are the most common issues we treat. We use a low-to-moderate pressure with a broad fan, paired with a gentle biocide where needed, then allow the stone to dry before any optional sealing. The aim is a clean, natural-looking finish — not a bleached or striped one. Because sandstone varies from block to block, Tommy assesses each area and talks you through the expected result before any work begins.

It can, which is exactly why we don't use high pressure on sandstone. We use a measured, low-to-moderate pressure with a wide fan and gentle biocide. The stone dictates the method, not the other way around.
Yes — organic growth is the most common issue we treat on sandstone, and it responds well to a gentle biocide followed by low-pressure rinsing. Most staining lifts noticeably; very deep discolouration may lighten rather than fully clear.
That's efflorescence — mineral salts wicking to the surface as moisture moves through the stone. We can treat it, but it often points to an underlying moisture issue. We'll explain what we see and what to expect.
Sealing can help repel water and slow future organic growth, especially on horizontal surfaces. We offer penetrating sealer as an add-on and can advise whether it suits your particular stone.
